Backflow Thefts On The Rise

With scrap metal values escalating, thieves have found new ways to make money; by stealing backflow valves, meters, and now the rising stems from gate valves on fire lines like those shown below. This “quick way to make a buck” is costing building owners thousands of dollars on replacement valves, and the only product available to keep them from making off with these stems is the SCWP StemLockTM from South Coast Water Protection, Inc.

Our patent-pending design includes several innovative approaches to protect your property:

Steal vs. Steel: Cylinder-in-cylinder technology

The powder coated heavy guage steel outer barrel and shackle-less hardened steel lock and latch are intimidating, to say the least. Just the presence of a protection device is usually enough to cause thieves to choose an easier target. But should a determined thief think he can cut through the barrel and then the stem, he's in for a very disappointing surprise. Inside the outer cylinder is another cylinder, this one free-floating and surrounding the stem. If a power saw manages to make it through the outer cylinder, it will simply spin the inner cylinder back and forth without results.

Open Valve Indicator

The rising stem can be viewed from the street, allowing fire and water district personnel to insure the stems are still intact and the valves are open and working as designed.

Stem Lock, not Wheel Lock

Superior design protects the valve stem from attack, yet allows the valve to be opened or closed by emergency and maintenance personnel without requiring a key to unlock it. The locking bar keeps the barrel securely attached to the wheel, but does not prevent the wheel from being turned.

Vertical or Horizontal Applications

Regardless of the type or size valve you need to protect, the SCWP StemLockTM will work for you. Vertical or horizontal, 8” or 10”, the SCWP StemLockTM is easily installed in minutes without tools. Should maintenance need to be performed or the SCWP StemLockTM needs to be removed for any reason, the hardened steel lock can be removed in seconds.
